Alarm Systems For The Home

Alarm Systems For The Home

Alarm systems for the home can provide you and your family with a great deal of peace of mind. Thieves will typically seek the path of least resistance, they will look for the easiest target. If your home has an alarm system and your neighbor's home does not, which one do you think would be an easier target for a thief? There are a lot of options when it comes to alarm systems for the home so you'll need to do your homework before you make a purchase.

Consider Your Budget

Before you purchase a home security system you'll have to consider your budget and the number of components you will need to provide adequate security. Alarm systems for the home don't have to be terribly expensive but the more components you need the more it is going to cost so the first thing you should do is figure out how many components you'll need.

Common Components

The most common components for a home security system are door and window sensors, motion detectors and glass break sensors. Door and window sensors work by having two contacts that complete a circuit. When a door or window is opened, the contacts come apart and the circuit is broken triggering the alarm. It is a good idea to get a glass break sensor as well because if the thief breaks a window to enter your house a regular window sensor would not be tripped if the window frame is still intact. A glass break sensor on the other hand is set to go off when it detects a certain sound frequency caused by breaking glass. Motion detectors are also a good idea because one motion detector can cover an entire room that otherwise would require multiple door and window sensors for adequate coverage.

Cover all of Your Entry Points

You'll have to determine all of the potential entry points and then figure out which types of components you'll need to cover those entry points. Once you have figured that out you will have a good idea of how many components you need and then you can start shopping for your alarm system.

Professional Monitoring or Self Monitoring

If you are planning on using the services of a monitoring company you may actually be able to get a good quality burglar alarm for free. Monitoring companies will often provide a free alarm system in exchange for signing a contract for the monthly monitoring service. When it comes to alarm systems for the home, a monitoring service is a good idea because if an alarm is tripped the monitoring company can call the police and have them at your house in a matter of minutes.

There is technology available these days that allow people to self monitor their security systems. With a monitored system, when an alarm is triggered a message is sent to the monitoring company which would then attempt to call the homeowner. If no one is home or if the wrong password is given the monitoring company would then notify the authorities. With a self monitored alarm system, when an alarm is triggered this system can be set up to call any one of a number of phone numbers that you wish, notifying you that an alarm has been triggered. If an alarm is triggered and you receive an automated call from your alarm system you can then notify the authorities yourself. A self monitored system is a great option for people that do not want to pay $30 or $40 a month for a professional monitoring company.

As you can see there are many options when it comes to alarm systems for the home. You'll have to spend some time researching all of the various options to figure out exactly which type of system is right for you.
